Bienvenidos a la clase de español! I am very excited you have chosen to learn Spanish this year and I am looking forward to getting to know all of you. From now until May we will explore the Spanish culture found in various areas of the world while also structuring the course around grammar, listening, reading, and writing.

Teacher Goals

My goal, is to provide numerous opportunities for you to communicate by means of speaking and writing in Spanish. I also want you to understand what you read and hear. We will achieve these goals as a class by speaking in Spanish during class time, participating in daily class discussions, reading, and listening to authentic sources and introducing a variety of vocabulary and grammar. You will learn to appreciate (hopefully) Spanish-speaking cultures through exposure to music, art and history.

Student Goals

Dedication is an important part in learning a foreign language. You will be expected to participate during class and to demonstrate your understanding and abilities in 3 modes: Interpretive, Interpersonal and Presentational as defined by District, State, and National Standards. Each unit will have an interpersonal speaking assessment.

    • Spanish 1 - 1 for 1st semester and 1 for 2nd semester
    • Spanish 2 - 1 for 1st semester and 1 for 2nd semester

Grades

Grades are calculated on a point basis throughout the semester and are based upon the new State and National World Language Standards found at www.actfl.org

Points are earned for daily speaking participation, classroom participation, partner activities, online homework, and assessments. Participation points may be deducted for failure to bring materials and/or lack of participation.

The following grading scale will be used:

A - 100%-90% B - 89%-80% C - 79%-70% D 69%-60% F - 59%<

Your grade will be updated at least every week online. You and your parents/guardian can check your progress grade on Infinite Campus. If you were absent for an assignment, your grade will be a zero (0) until you have it made up. You will have one (1) week to make up tests and quizzes from the day you return to my class. You may only make up work for excused absences, unexcused absences will remain a zero (0).

Assessments

  • Grades will reflect individual achievement of course objectives.
  • Student grades will be based on tests and quizzes as well as other activities such as projects (both individual and group), homework completion, oral conversations (interpersonal communication), structured dialogues (interpretive communication) the student’s classroom notebook, and in class participation (volunteering and adding to the discussion), reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  • We will have exams and quizzes to assess your comprehension and growth.
  • If you are absent the class immediately before the exam or quiz you will be responsible for the assessment on the scheduled day.
  • Make ups on exams and quizzes are required to be completed with one week of the day you return to class.  You are expected to come see me outside of class time to schedule a help session to get caught up on missed material.  If an exam or quiz is not made up within one week you risk a zero on the assessment unless a specific make up plan is discussed with me the day you return to class.

Homework

I will have assignments posted on the board and on Google Classroom so you know what is due and when it is due.

Attendance

(Please refer to the handout entitled School Attendance & Tardy Policies)

Absences

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get caught up as soon as you return.  Any handouts given the day(s) you were absent will be left in the tray in the classroom for your level, please check that the day you return. Homework or other assignments will also be available in this location.

  • All missed quizzes and exams must be made up within 1 week of the missed assessment or you risk a zero on the assessment. *If you have missed more than 3 days in a row during that unit, please email or see me before or after school the day you return to class to create a plan to get caught up and schedule a time for the assessment to be completed (this is your responsibility).
  • Students may not be able to make up work missed during an unexcused absence.

Passes are always required to leave the classroom.

Please ask permission to use the restroom and sign in and out. Bathroom breaks are for 5 minutes only, one student at a time.

Behavior

PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL! Your behavior in the classroom should reflect respect for one another and the teacher as well as the learning process. All school rules concerning safety, behavior, and the dress code policy will be enforced. Remember:

  • NO CELL PHONES/DEVICES - I reserve the right to take and keep your cell phone/device until the end of the class period if it is a distraction to you, me or other students.

 Cell Phone Policy

Each student will be assigned a number in a cell phone pocket chart holder in alphabetical order. There will be times where your phone will be allowed in class for educational purposes, if I did not inform the class that cell phones can be out I have the right to take your cell phone if it is a distraction to myself, you or other students. If your cell phone is not in the pocket chart in your assigned numbr at the start of class you will be marked tardy.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES THIS YEAR. TRY YOUR BEST, WORK HARD, AND HAVE FUN!
